Brew Review: Death by Coconut by Oskar Blues

Last weekend, the fella and I visited CRAFT Beer & Wine in Alameda. We met a local couple out watching football a couple of weeks ago, and they said it was the best place to get craft beer in the area. It was smaller than we expected, but they sell mainly singles, so they have a lot of well-curated variety. We were in search of a basic milk stout, like Left Hand, to mix with another beer (more on that in a future post). CRAFT’s beer were all so special that we didn’t find anything we wanted to mix, but we did pick up a few beers to try. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and we will definitely go back. I’m hoping they get Goose Island Cooper Project No. 3 in upcoming weeks, but I digress.

Back to Death by Coconut! It’s a coconut porter, and it packs a ton of coconut flavour into the can. It poured with very little effervescence, but it didn’t taste flat. Definitely a sipper, I really enjoyed my half of the can.

When we logged it into Untappd, we were surprised to see that we had already tried it and I hadn’t given it rave reviews (only a 3.75/5 from me). Upon further research, I realized that we had tried it at a House of Blues beer event back in December, on the same night that we had finally tried Goose Island’s Bourbon County stout for the first time. We had a couple other barrel-aged beers that night, too, so I just guess our palates weren’t ready for something as “light” as a coconut porter.

This time around, I gave Death by Coconut 4.5 stars.
